The North West Umstead Citizens Advisory Council

The NW Umstead Citizens Advisory Council is a volunteer-run community organization and one of the 18 CACs located throughout Raleigh. The CACs are advisory bodies of the Raleigh City Council whose members are not appointed but are volunteers involved in the planning for the future of their community. Our neighbor Mary Hageman regularly attends meetings and shared information about the organization at the January 2008 SGHOA annual meeting.

CAC meetings feature presentations of proposed zoning changes with Q&A. These presentations are on even months (Feb, Apr, etc). On odd months (Jan, Mar, May, etc), CAC members vote their approval or rejection of the previous month's zoning requests. A CAC representative presents its members votes at a public zoning hearing.

A police officer is assigned as CAC liaison and attends the meeting. The meeting offers a chance to ask questions and learn of police activities and concerns in the CAC district.
