In 2003, there was much concern voiced by SGHOA Members about a plan to extend Strickland Road on a new alignment to connect with Westgate Road near the Post Office. The following is a link to the News & Observer article published January 18, 2008, describing the State's current position that this extension is now not necessary since I-540 has opened.

Strickland Road extension nixed
plan obsolete with building of I-540

Note that this change will likely not change plans to widen Strickland between Creedmoor Road and Leesville Road at some time in the future.

Notes from the 2003 public hearing:

There were many attendees, and the Springdale Gardens subdivision was well represented by residents. Most of the concern voiced by residents was regarding cut-through traffic on Springdale Drive between Leesville Road and Strickland. There was also much concern voiced by several residents about the increased speed and traffic flow on Strickland that is likely to result from this project.

In addition to Springdale Gardens residents, the Westgate Subdivision was well represented and these residents were quite vocal of their displeasure with the location of the section of Strickland extending between the rear portion of their subdivision and I-540. It was apparent that the NCDOT had based the need for this new section of Strickland Road based on traffic counts and analysis performed before I-540 was opened. Many of the Westgate residents felt that if updated traffic counts were made, the need for this extension of Strickland would be found to be unnecessary. They felt that widening existing Westgate would be sufficient.
